Why Chutzpah?
Okay – you’re either smiling now or have a puzzled look on your face. You may already be intrigued by the only keynote speaker dedicated to sharing the Rules of Chutzpah. Or, you’re slightly confused because although you have a vague idea of what it means to have Chutzpah you’re not sure if it’s good, bad, or might even require a doctor’s visit.
I’m here to help. (You’re welcome.)
So what is Chutzpah? As you struggle with a definition of chutzpah, please allow me to quote former United States Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart who in 1964 famously stated that although he may not be able to define it exactly, “I know it when I see it.” (Yes – technically he wasn’t speaking about Chutzpah, but was commenting on a matter related to obscenity and pornography. That notwithstanding, work with me here.)
Self-confidence. Shameless behavior. Audacity. Inspired creativity. Gumption. Moxie. Extraordinary leadership. Gall. Winner. Cojones. This list is a good start but doesn’t quite cover what you need to know about chutzpah. As well - chutzpah crosses geography, language and culture.
As with so many necessities, like water that is needed for life but can also endanger you, fire that provides heat but can burn your house down, and politicians that either inspire you or cause you to curse at relatives over Thanksgiving dinner, Chutzpah is neither good nor bad. It can be in your face… or hidden. It can be self-serving, other-serving, or both. And successful people use the Rules of Chutzpah to get ahead.
Let’s give your audience the keys to Chutzpah! It will enhance their work, personal lives and your organization!
